Who are you, and what is the point of this book?

Hi! I’m Dr. Jonathan Terry, and I’m a physician based in California. I work in free clinics and community mental health settings with patients who are both very ill and unable to afford insurance. I love education and service, particularly around the topics of mental health. The Pursuit of Capyness: A Zen Capybara Coloring Book is a way to make people smile while doing something creative AND to help fund volunteer efforts, donations, and service. More on this below!

Where can I find the coloring book and what does it cost?

The book is available on amazon.com in the United States, the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Canada. All of the country names are linked above for direct ordering.

The book price is $11.99, adjusted automatically by Amazon for other currencies.

What is the book like?

  • 103 total pages
  • 50+ images of capybaras (including with other animals)
  • 50+ capybara facts, games, puzzles, puns, jokes, and more
  • Crisp pages with good margins so you don’t color off the pages
  • Sufficient detail for an adult coloring book with mandala-style images as well as more cartoon-style images for a children’s coloring book

Is this for real?

Yes, absolutely! Here are some images (posted with permission) of the book in use.

What are some examples of how funds from this book are being used?

  • Toward a free medical clinic that provides care to 200+ people every Saturday. The clinic was recently featured on national news
  • Book donations to mental health clinics and shelters; we are currently discussing donating 300+ books to children at a women and children’s shelter
  • Free services for the uninsured, underinsured, students, and impaired professionals
  • Consultation to nonprofits serving mental health and primary care causes
  • Education for health sciences students, pre-meds, and more, with the goal to improve access and investment in our communities in the long-term
  • During furloughs and disasters, we have seen federal employees and displaced people for free
  • International disaster relief (such as recent volunteering with the World Central Kitchen after hurricane Durian)
  • Book donations to children and adults undergoing chemotherapy or long medical procedures and hospital stays

How do I know you’re not pocketing millions of dollars on this project?

Well, for starters, one has to sell a LOT of books to generate any money. Most of each sale goes toward printing costs, shipping costs, and Amazon’s commission for listing the book. The book is a creative way to help people donate toward these causes who might not donate if not for a cool, tangible, colorful, CAPYful dividend. It’s safe to say that with expected sales of this book, I will still be putting a lot of personal time and funding toward the service goals mentioned.

Why the capybara?

Besides being an awesome animal to learn about, the capybara is adorable, gregarious, tolerant, intelligent, and beloved by people all over the world.

Where can I learn more or ask questions?

Where have the book or its proceeds been donated to or shared with so far?

  • Contra Costa County Adult Mental Health – an agency seeing adults and children with Severe Mental Illness (SMI)
  • The Fresno Free Medical Clinic – a mobile clinic and needle exchange operating exclusively by volunteers for 20+ years
  • TakeThis AFK Rooms, a full, comprehensive convention wellness program: https://www.takethis.org/programs/afk-rooms/
  • Affiliates of Dr. Lara Salyer, an integrative physician leader in Wisconsin
  • Traditions Behavioral Health – the largest private employer of psychiatrists in California
  • Several patients undergoing chemotherapy or recovering from medical procedures (for some coloring to keep busy!)
  • The Marjoree Mason Center (a domestic violence shelter for women and children)
  • MANASU – an international mental health agency
  • Countless “anonymous” donations (at the donor or recipient’s request)

Do you have any other books to support this great cause?

Yes, absolutely! Check out my other books here: https://drjonathanterry.com/teaching-speaking-research/#books.
